Marianne from Belanda | Signed on: Wed 07 Apr 2010 13:08:18 CEST Hello CS, I understand your question, and I thnik it is a good thing to discuss about. Of course the level of education in Lombok is different from the level in Europe. In elementary school the kids start studying English language, but not enough to have a conversation. After completing Highschool, most of them will be able to have a simple conversation in English. My rough guess is that the level of University study English in Lombok is about equal to the level of Secondary school in Europe. The main problem is the lack of teachers who speak/write good English, even in Highschool. About computer skills: it is very much depending on the interests of the students. At Highschool they sometimes work with computers but only very basic skills, I think for most of the elementary schools and Junior Highschools in Lombok computers are far to expensive. But real computer-whizzkids who have acces to internet-cafe, of course can learn a lot, probably more than their teachers know about the subject. Over all, this may sound depressing, but I think every chance the Lombok children get to learn is worth it. It will take a lot of time to raise the level of education, but every improvement will help the people in Lombok. Kind regards, Marianne |
ctibor from CR | Signed on: Tue 06 Apr 2010 10:54:34 CEST Hi Guys, that seems an unfortunate true like with many other things there. And the top-down corruption won't allow to make it any better. The education and second language can make a big difference in quality of the life. And that is my second question. What is the overall performance of the elementary and high school which these kids are attending? Say, can they easily read, count and understand English and they are computer literate or the result is that they are more-less "aware" of the subject? I have read few studies about and the performance difference is huge. That makes mi thinking about how to ensure that these kids will finally turn into educated adults who will be able to contribute back to the community and so keeping this wheel spinning. Thnx |
